Finally! After more than a month, I’m back to talk about my adventures! And this one is such an important one: Metallica in Baltimore. This was just a dream that came true. First, because it’s one of my favorite bands, the first metal band I’ve ever listened to, and that means so much to me. Then, when I saw them the first time in 2008, I was already telling my parents I wanted to go in the US for a year after high school. So, basically, see my favorite band in the US was just the perfect thing. And in addition to this, I got SUPER lucky!
Let’s start from the beginnig. I took the bus at around 10AM. I knoooow it’s crazy. But when you want to get to the front row in a 65’000-people stadium, you need to take precautions. Anyway, on my way to the stadium, a guy stopped me and asked me if I was going to the show alone. At first, as a good European, I was like « whooooo why are you asking em this? » But it actually ended up that he had two sankepit passes and he was alone so he was looking for someone who was alone as well to share the passes. How can I say that this was the best gift ever?
The next five hours were spent waiting in front of the metal detectors, making new friends, and so, practicing my speaking skills. I’ll always be impressed of how people are just open and start talking with everyone. I’m not saying this never happens in Switzerland, but it’s, in some way, different. So that was really cool.
Then, finally doors opened. And what a great feeling when entering the snakepit! I guess the other door opened a little earlier and the first row was full. But the snakepit was empty! Anyway, that was awesome ahah!
One hour later, the first concert started. It was Volbeat. I just knew them by name but had never listened to them. I can’t say I totally fell in love with their music but as an opening act, and afetr all this waiting, it was just fine. Not like the « DJ » that entertained the crowd in between the bands. It was so annoying. It’s suppose to make the waiting feel shorter but all it did was the opposite. He tried to mix some heavy music but it didn’t work at all.
When I started to get excited was when Avenged Sevenfold came on stage. It was such a long time that I wanted to see them and I wasn’t disappointed. Matt’s voice is incredible live, the guitar solos make you cry and Synyster is sooooooo sexy 😍 They played mostly their most-known songs which was really cool because I could sing along the whole time ahaha! And the best part was that, at the end, while they were thanking the audience, they walked around the snakepit and Matt actually saw me « on the other side » and stepped back to give me a high-five 😍 If you’re wondering, yes, my reaction was something like « OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD 😱😱😱😱😱😱 »
After a bit less than an hour, the dream started. The Ecstasy Of Gold was in the speakers and the famous scene of the movie on the screens. That’s when I began to cry. And then, boom, Metallica were on stage, playing Hardwired. And I kept crying the whole song ahaha It was so huge. As you can see on the pictures, between the M and A were five enormous screens were not only live footage but also incredible visuals linked with the song were displayed. On top of everything were two giant baloons with the cover of the Hardwired album, not very useful to the show but pretty cool anyway. The setlist was well-prepared: not too many new songs, but still enough to justify the name of the tour, and kind of all the songs everyone likes: Fuel, For Whom The Bell Tolls (with videos of Cliff on the back), Master Of Puppets…We actually also heard their four most famous ballads, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, One and Fade To Black. It wasn’t that bad but maybe just one or two would have been enough. The only one I would kick out is Halo Of Fire because I think it simply doesn’t work live. The big surprise of the show was Seek and Destroy. In fact, a second drumset popped from under the stage, at the front of the snakepit and they played the song there. The stage was so big that it was nice to have them all at the same place for a few minutes. Of course, the show ended with firewoks and pyro everywhere, like any real American show.
I don’t know if words can describe how much this concert meant to me and how much happiness it brought me. I’m feeling home now here in DC, but still, sometimes, I miss Switzerland so much, and that night just gave me a kick of happiness that will keep me smiling until I go back home.
I think that while I’m writing this, more than one month after, my eyes are still sparkling ❤

Enfin ! Après plus d’un mois, me voilà de retour pour parler de mes aventures ! Et celle-ci est plutôt importante : Metallica à Baltimore. C’est juste un rêve devenu réalité. D’abord parce que c’est un de mes groupes préférés, le premier groupe de metal que j’aie écouté, et c’est vraiment important pour moi. Ensuite, parce que, la première fois que je les ai vus en 2008, je disais déjà à mes parents que je voulais partir une année aux US après le gymnase. Donc en gros, les voir ici c’était comme un rêve dans un rêve. Et en plus, j’ai été HYPER chanceuse. Commençons par le commencement. J’ai pris le bus vers 10h du matin. Je saaaais, je suis folle. Mais quand tu veux être au premier rang dans un stade de 65’000 personnes, il faut mettre toutes les chances de son côté. Bref, sur le chemin entre l’arrêt de bus et le stade, un gars m’a arrêtée en me demandant si j’allais au concert toute seule. En bonne européenne, ma première réaction a été « whooooo pourquoi tu me demandes ça ? » Mais au final, le gars avait gagné des pass snakepit et comme il était tout seul, il cherchait quelqu’un qui était aussi seul pour utiliser le deuxième pass. Comment dire que c’était le meilleur cadeau du monde ? Les cinq heures suivantes se sont résumées à attendre en face des détecteurs de métaux, à se faire de nouveaux amis et améliorer mon anglais. Je reste toujours impressionnée de comme les gens ici sont ouverts et comment ils parlent facilement avec tout le monde. Je dis pas que ça arrive pas en Suisse, mais c’est différent. A 16h, les portes ont finalement ouvert. Et quel soulagement d’être dans le snakepit ! Je pense que les portes de l’autre côté ont ouvert un peu avant parce que le premier rang était déjà bien plein partout quand je suis arrivée en bas. Mais le snakepit était vide ! Bref, c’était trop bien ahaha Une heure plus tard, le premier concert commençait. C’était Volbeat. Je connaissais juste de nom, j’avais jamais vraiment écouté. Je peux pas dire que je suis tombée amoureuse de leur musique mais, comme première partie, et après toute cette attente, ça allait très bien. Pas comme le « DJ » qui mixait entre les groupes. J’ai jamais entendu quelque chose d’aussi insupportable dans ce contexte. Le gars essayait de mixer des morceaux heavy mais ça marchait paaaas du tout. Quand j’ai commencé à être vraiment excitée, c’est quand Avenged Sevenfold sont arrivés sur scène. Ça faisait tellement longtemps que je voulais les voir, et j’ai pas été déçue. La voix de Matt est incroyable en live, les solos de guitares te font pleurer et Synyster est teeeeellement sexy 😍 Il ont principalement joué leurs morceaux les plus connus, ce qui était plutôt cool parce que j’ai pu chanter tout le long ahahah ! Et le plus chouette, c’est qu’à la fin, pendant qu’ils saluaient le plublic, ils marchaient autour du snakepit et Matt m’a vue, est revenu en arrière et m’a fait un high-five 😍 Si vous vous posez la question, oui, ma réaction à été quelque chose du style « OH MON DIEU OH MON DIEU OH MON DIEU 😱😱😱😱😱😱 » Après un peu moins d’une heure, le rêve a commencé. The Ecstasy Of Gold a retenti et les images du film étaient sur les écrans. C’est là où j’ai commencé à pleurer. Et là, boom, Metallica étaient sur scène, jouant Hardwired. Et j’ai continué à pleurer pendant toute la chanson ahaha C’était tellement énorme. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos, il y avait cinq monstrueux écrans entre le M et le A et ils diffusaient non seulement des images live, mais aussi des visuels incroyables, en lien avec les chansons. Tout en haut, il y avait aussi deux ballon géants avec la pochette de l’album, par vraiment utiles mais plutôt cools. La setlist était bien faite : pas trop de nouvelles chanson, mais quand même assez pour justifier le nom de la tournée, et à peu près tous les morceaux que tout le monde aime : Master Of Pupetts, For Whom The Bell Tolls (avec des vidéos de Cliff en fond), Fuel… On a aussi eu droit à leurs quatre ballades les plus connues, The Unforgiven, One, Nothing Else Matters et Fade To Black. C’était pas désagréable mais deux auraient suffi. Le seul morceau que j’enlèverai, ce serait Halo Of Fire parce que j’ai trouvé qu’il fonctionnait pas du tout en live. La grosse surprise du show a été Seek And Destroy. Une deuxième batterie est soudainement apparue de la scène, à l’avant du snakepit et ils ont joué la chanson là. La scène était tellement grande que c’était plutôt cool de les avoir tous au même endroit pendant 5 minutes. Et bien sûr, comme tout bon show américain, ça a fini en pyro et feux d’artifices. Je sais pas si des mots peuvent décrire combien ce concert était important pour moi et combien de bonheur il m’a apporté. Je me sens à la maison ici à DC, mais quand même, des fois, la Suisse me manque tellement. Et cette soirée m’a rechargée d’une dose de bonheur qui va me faire sourire jusqu’à ce que je rentre. Je pense que au moment où j’écris ceci, plus d’un mois après, j’ai toujours des étoiles plein les yeux ❤
